This small group shore excursion travels to Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair National Park, as well as the unique Tasmanian Townships of Sheffield and Railton, while your ship is berthed in Burnie. Travelling through the Highlands and Wilderness Region of Tasmania, you enjoy the spectacular scenery of Cradle Mountain, as well as visiting Sheffield to see the town’s world-famous murals and Railton to see the iconic topiary, with a brief stop to view the Cethana Dam from a high vantage point.
You will be transported from the wharf to the Maker’s Workshop in Burnie by free shuttle bus arranged by the ship’s agents. Here you will meet your guide at the Maker’s Workshop for this small group tour travelling by road to the Tasmanian Wilderness Region, an area covering almost 20% of Tasmania, and into Cradle Mountain and Lake St. Clair National Park. You will visit Dove Lake, a typical example of a glacial lake and from here you will be able to view and experience the majestic Cradle Mountain and catch glimpses of the native wildlife, which are abundant in this area. Visit the Waldheim Chalet, the forest home of Austria-born Gustav Weindorfer, who pioneered the Cradle Mountain region in the early 1900s. Here you can learn about the history of the region and see the cute little creatures of Australia, including wombats, potoroos and wallabies and many bird species.
The group will head for Sheffield and Railton, stopping off, on route at the viewing outlook to take in the magnificence of the 110m high Cethana Dam. In Sheffield you can view the many murals painted on the walls throughout the town that depict the area’s rich history and natural scenery. Sheffield is a suitable place to stop for lunch (at own expense). The first mural was painted in Sheffield in December 1986. Since then, over 60 murals depicting the area’s rich history and beautiful natural scenery have been painted on walls through out the town and buildings along the roadside.
Then, time permitting, on to Railton to discover the magic of topiary in the “Town of Topiary”. There are many topiaries underway in various stages of growth. In many instances frames are in place to give a guide on how the topiary will appear once the plants are fully grown.
